I think that it's unfortunate that you now charge people to view the paper in it's entirety online. For many readers this site is the only link they have to their home town. I find it especially distasteful that your online readers are now unable to read an entire obituary without paying for it.

I grew up with this paper literally my mom was in labor with me here. My dad worrked here for a number of years and now my mother is an inside service rep and i read the journal everyday. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

I do question why in Oct. 22, 2005 sport section the Snake River Panthers are featured, and not the Pocatello High School Indians by a "perfect regular season". FYI to all about Pocatello. Newsweek magazine issue July 25, 2005, article on page 46: "PSST! WANNA Hot Deal?"... Pocatello has been recognized as a beautiful and real estate wise place to move. - Some of us already know that! It's nice that the city with a funny name is recognized for it real beauty - the people and the landscape.

Hi to all in Pocatello. We lived there for a year and still have many dear friends and family in and around Pocatello. The web cam section is the coolest!! Our friends Al and Dan where in the vets parade and we just checked in to see photos. But now will be looking at the paper more often!!

It would be nice to see the Journal do a story on the Lemhi-Shoshone - not just Sho-Bans. In Aug. 2005, it will be the 200th Anniversary since Lewis and Clark met the Lemhi at present day Clark Canyon. And in 1907 it will be the 100th anniversay since the Lemhi-Shoshone were stripped of recognition and forced to Fort Hall. (Originally from the Salmon, Idaho area) I noticed the Statesman and even the New York Times have done a story, but the Journal still has not bothered.

I just found this website and my family and I are excited. Two years ago we moved from beautiful Pocatello to the barren wasteland of Las Vegas. Boy, the Journal has made a great many changes in the paper lately. Most of them are pretty good, but the enjoy is kind of wacky because it is in alphabetical rather than in channel order. I liked that better.

I am originally from Marsh Valley, joined the USAF and was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, AK. Now I am currently deployed overseas and I would just like to say THANK YOU! It is so nice to be able to get online and read the news back home. I read the stories that were in the paper for Memorial Day and I would also like to thank everyone for all of their support. I don't know from reading the articles about the new coal fired electrical generating facility where its exact location will be but judging from the comment I would gather that it is going to be in Power county. This sure reminds me of the faux pas which the city of Pocatello made when the orginal phosphate plants were built. The city fathers dilly dallied about the issue of schools and facilities to the result that the plants were constructed in Power county. Naturally, the resultant tax revenue from these plants went to Power county and Bannock county ended up educating the kids and providing the services. Is this deja vu all over again?

I am currently in the Navy stationed in Japan, I lived in Inkom for 7 years. I left 5 years ago and I sometimes look in the Journal to see the news and whats going on back home and I rarely see articals about the service members that are deployed overseas and what they do, but I do enjoy reading about whats making news today. Great article about the writing scene in Pocatello. I was born in Boise but live in AZ. I'm curious though, are writers meant to be reading their work out loud? What writers prefer to just write, and let their books be read, as opposed to those that need to have their stuff heard vocally? I feel writing is meant to be read.

I was born in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High with the great class of "57. I attended ISU and met my husband Eddie at ISU.After my marriage we came to Texas where we have been the last 40+ years.I still have lots of family in Pocatello and Mackay so I try to get back often to get my Idaho fix. Do you not know of the murder of one of your own? Nathan Fries, born and raised in Pocatello was murdered by his roommates(also born and raised in Pocatello) in Meridian and then dumped his body in Oregon. Why am I not seeing anything of this in your paper?

All I can say is: thank you, thank you! Our family will be relocating to Pocatello from California in June. My husband, Eric has already moved in order to begin his new job as the General Sales Manager at Phil Meador Toyota-Jeep-Subaru. Your webcam has enabled our three sons to see their daddy each night before bed while on the phone with him! What a great surprise for them! I was a resident of Pocatello, Idaho for over 30 years. I have been featured in The Journal several times as a singer/songwriter/musician and have recently released my 3rd CD. I sent a press release and a complimentary CD to The Journal over 3 weeks ago, hoping The Journal would continue it's support of my musical endeavors. Last week I sent an email to Joy Morrison asking if The Journal was going to print any article or make any mention of my recent achievement. I have not received a reply. I now live in NYC and am continuing my career in a place more conducive to my musical goals. I haven't forgotten where my roots are, but I'm beginning to wonder if Pocatello has forgotten about me. As a former school principal at various schools in Pocatello; Whittier, Roosevelt, and Lincoln, I was surprised to find the Guestbook Site. I enjoy reading about old friends and situations I left 14 years ago. nice to read about Rulon Ellis still serving the community in various ways. I have nothing but fond memories of School District 25 and the wonderful staff and families that I worked with. Five of my children graduated from Highland. Kim and Kris were cheer leaders at Highland. Great memories for them. My grandson attends Hawthorne and is the last of our family to remain in the area. West Jordan, Ut. is now home for us, but Pocatello, Chubbuck will always be one of our family"s great experiences. I have family that live in Pocatello and when I used your web cam a little while ago I surprised my mom and ask if she would drive over to the Idaho state Journal where the camera is located, while we were talking on cell phones I told her that I could see her driving down the street, she pulled over and got out of her car and waved to the camera(building) and I clicked on the camera button and took a picture of her. It"s amazing what technology can do. I was so ecstatic that morning that I got to see my mom even when I live in a differnt state. Thanks so much for the ability to do that. I hope there will be other camera stationed around town. It"s awesome! Will there be more cameras installed? Thanks :)

I just read some of your GuestBook entries and this reply is probably inapproiate. However, I nearly moved to Pocatello to that University in 1964 with my now exhusband who was accepted a the athletic trainer, we went back to the South from Texas. Yes I know, y"awl consider Texas in the South, but it isn"t although East Texas is similiar. I did drive through from Montana to Washinton state about 12 years ago and it was as beautiful as I had thought it would be. An added joy: we went through the town home base for "Our Gal Sunday; who lived in a little mining town in the West." My name is Cole Schwartz and I am currently in the process of deploying to Iraq. I am a member of the Idaho national Guard. I just wanted to say how nice it is to be able to go online and read the local paper. I also want to thank our community for all of the support. You guys are great. I have lived in Pocatello for 9 years and for the most part its not a bad place. I love the mountains and all the trees they are so beatiful in the fall. Orange, yellow, red, and purple covers Idaho"s mountains. I don"t think I like it here enough to stay 9 more years but who knows I just might!!

I lived in Pokey for over 35 years moving away 9 years ago, I read the Journal every morning to keep up with what is going on back in my home town. I know pokey is a small town but I really think that you could update the paper a little more often, you have had the same articles under the briefs section for over two weeks now. I will continue to read the paper every morning but come on,add some new news to the paper now and then.

My first trip to Pocatella was 8/6/04 and I fell in love with the town. My family and I took my grandson there. He will be playing football at the university. We plan on coming back for most of the home games, and two of the away games also. For the next four years Pocatello will be our home away from home.

Hellon This is my first time writing in. I am absolutely stunned that the Rotary President Gary Black said in an article that the Carson and Barnes Circus has a good record. This horrific circus was just “caught” last year on underncover video beating their elephants with bull hooks and electrocuting them as they screamed in pain. The United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) fined them $400 for this. By “paying” this little fine, the circus was able to avoid having a “Violation of the Animal Welfare Act” attached to their name. So this is why the USDA and the circus always says “we have not been found in Violation of the Animal Welfare Act,” which is technically true but OnLY because they “settled” out of court. The abuse on the tape is brutal and the elephant trainer even says on underncover video “you have to hurt the elephant here. I am not going to do this in front of thousands of people.” I can surely understand Gary Black not knowing about the circuses elephant mistreatment history to begin with but for ! him to stick up for the circus after the elephant cruelty facts are brought to light is not right. Elephants should be treated humanely and not hit with bull hooks and electrocuted to make them perform tricks such as an elephant standing on their head. It is too bad that caring people go to the circus and spend their money and have no idea of the abuse inflicted on these elephants. James Fontaine

GUEST OPInIOn n July 22, 2004 Submitted by Senator Clint Stennett (D.nKetchum), Senate Minority Leader and Representative Wendy Jaquet (D.nKetchum), House Minority Leader. It is disturbing that part of the work managing Idaho"s food stamp program is being subcontracted to a company in India. An Associated Press story recently reported the fact that Idahoans who have questions about their food stamp debitnstyle cards, call in to an automated system which if unable to answer, directs these calls overseas. According to the story the system fields about 150,000 calls per month and about 1,100 are sent to the call center in India. The volume of business may not sound large but the problem exists not only in Idaho but throughout the nation. A number of states contract with J.P. Morgan Chase in new York, as cited in a report by Good Jobs First, a group advocating for highernpaying jobs in America. The report reveals that food stamp programs aren"t the only offshore contracts. Others exist in computer technology assistance and software development. This begs the question why, in these times of high unemployment in our state, do we send these jobs overseas? Our governor has promoted jobs in Idaho and throughout his administration has advocated the need to stimulate our economy and reduce the unemployment rate. It is insulting that we are using state tax money to send jobs overseas at the expense of our local economy. The practice of allowing state government agencies to contract with out of state companies who then subncontract their work out of the country needs to be revisited and explored in depth. The loss of many manufacturing jobs could be replaced with jobs in call centers and information technology. Idaho needs these jobs. We have the ability to make changes in the way Idaho does its business. We can and should be looking into ways to ensure that Idahoans have every opportunity to live and work in Idaho. We would consider introducing legislation to accomplish that goal. We have a work force that is willing, able and available. Let"s make sure that we keep those workers here. Questions or comments? The web cam is tons of fun but I"d like to see a better way to sleuth the archives. I was looking for a particular obituary from the mid 90"s and was unsuccessful at finding it.

Thanks for making your paper available on line. I live in Rupert now. I didn"t realize there was a north/south line drawn just east of Raft River that decides where your news comes from. Most of what we get here comes from Boise and points west. I like eastern Idaho news having lived in Preston and Pocatello.

I really enjoyed the CLASS of 2004 insert in today"s paper. Is there anyway to recognize students that graduate in a less traditional way? We moved back to Pocatello after school started last fall. My daughter, Rebekah, was a senior. Rather than have to redo her senior year, she opted to take her classes online through the State of Idaho"s Digital Learning Academy. She completed her courses, and will receive her diploma from West Side High School, where she attended the first three years of high school; but the principal there refused to allow her to walk with the graduating class. (A side note is that he allows foreign exchange students who attend only one year of school there to walk with the graduating class.) She could hardly be an embarrassment to them as she won academic honors and awards while attending West Side High, including Idaho"s Math Student of the Year. She also completed 20 college credits (straight A) while enrolled at West Side High. I gues! s that what I am saying is that she is a remarkable student who deserves some recognition for all her hard work. THank you for allowing me to spout. I would also like to thank Matt Edwards, the counselor at West Side High, for getting in Beci"s corner and making it possible for her to receive her diploma. Too bad West Side is letting their best assets go. Good luck in St. George to the Edwards family.

I heard we had a little snow there in Souther Idaho so I looked up your paper on the Internet to see how much. While there I clicked on the Web Cam to see for myself. What was really cool was that I could control where the camera pointed to, it"s angle and zoom. Thank you, I really enjoyed it and will be back often to check out the weather. nothing like looking out the window yourself to see what the weather is doing. Kind of like having my own weather rock right there in Pocatello. Keep it up.

It"s nice to see that the journal is keeping up with the times by going onnline. I wonder if your auction mania might get a better response if you made it available to the public for posting, and bidding such as on ebay. I think that eventually all those who are into yard sales both as a consumer, and as a seller would gravitate to the journal, and potentially make it a lucrative proposition for all. What you are offering now just looks like another advertising campaign for businesses.
