On 2000 wings and a prayer
For the Journal

POCATELLO -- Chris Arvas loves things that fly. Airplanes adorn the walls and shelves of his room as he joyfully pretends to fly the hand-carved airplane rocker he sits atop. Today there is a new constellation of wings taking flight in the 3-year-old's bedroom -- 1,000 origami cranes folded by his grandmother, Pam Arvas, or "Pam-Ma" as Chris affectionately calls her.

Chris is also excited about the brand-new blue suitcase he got for Christmas. Only he's not packing his pajamas and matchbox cars for a typical vacation. The Pocatello boy is headed to Salt Lake City this week for heart surgery to treat a condition he was born with called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
