Mutt adopted just in time
ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) -- A puppy was saved on her final day from euthanasia at an animal shelter that says it has too many unwanted pets.
Saturday was a lucky day for Ruby, equal parts bronze lab and pit bull. Volunteers at the St. George Animal Shelter had Ruby and other dogs outside for visitors, with Christmas music playing on loudspeakers and Santa sitting for photos. That's when 15-year-old Torrie Reed and her mother took an interest in the puppy's grim fate.
"I feel good, because we're going to bring her home," the teenager told The Spectrum of St. George. Ruby had reached the end of her term at the shelter, a problem at many shelters as the economy takes a toll on family finances.
The St. George Animal Shelter is constantly full, said Carol Peckham, president of PAWS or Providing Animals With Support. It's not just dogs, either. St. George's animal control officer, April McManus, says her cat pound is almost full.
Other shelters and rescue organizations in southern Utah are holding adoption drives, the newspaper reported. On the Net:
