Highland 37, Box Elder 23

LOGAN, Utah -- The Highland girls' basketball team survived an off shooting night to beat Box Elder out of Brigham City, Utah, 37-23 on Thursday to open the Sky View High tournament in Logan, Utah.
Senior post Emma Filiaga led the way for the Rams by scoring 14 points. No other Highland player scored more than six.

"We played hard the whole game. That's not a question with this group," said Rams coach Scott Hansen. "They play hard; they compete. Right now, we're just not shooting the ball well."
Against Box Elder, Highland made only 17-of-70 field goal attempts, but the Rams' defense held the opponent in check. Because of that defensive effort, Highland improved to 6-0 on the season.

"I'm happy we're winning," Hansen said. "We have a good group of girls, but we just have to do the little things to get to where we want to be."
On Day 2 of the tournament today, the Rams will face Mountain Crest out of Hyrum, Utah, at 5:30 p.m.

Preston 57, Shelley 42
PRESTON -- Behind 20 points from Holly Checketts and 10 from Brooke Beckstead, the Preston girls' basketball team defeated Shelley 57-42 on Thursday.

The Indians improved to 3-3 with the win and now head into their district opener against Pocatello on Tuesday with some momentum.
Six other Indians scored around Checketts and Beckstead.

"This was a good game for us," coach Ryon Pope said. "We had eight different people who got into the scoring column, and Holly had a great game. She's had a lot of them this year."
Preston led 30-17 at halftime but watched Shelley come back to within three points in the third quarter. That's when Beckstead hit a 3-pointer to swing the game back in the Indians' favor.

They won easily after that.
Snake River 46, South Fremont 38

MORELAND -- Steven Morton said his Snake River girls' basketball team was fortunate to beat South Fremont 46-38 on Thursday.
But thanks to a 16-0 run at the end of the game, the Panthers moved to 3-2 anyway.

"It was a sluggish game," Morton said. "They had a girl score 18 points in the third quarter, and that took us by surprise. She was shooting into an ocean there. But we started pressing at the end and got some easy baskets to win in the last five minutes."

Saige Goff led Snake River with 21 points. The Panthes next play at Sugar-Salem on Saturday.

Soda Springs 51, Bear Lake 31

MONTPELIER -- The Soda Springs girls' basketball team wore down Bear Lake 51-31 on Thursday.

The Cardinals only led 24-19 at halftime but stomped the Bears in the third quarter 18-2 to ice the victory.

Bear Lake coach Jim Mattson said turnovers did in the Bears in the second half.

"We had 30 turnovers, and that's too many for Bear Lake," he said.

Hillary Hendricks led Bear Lake with 13 points, while Madie Kimball paced the Cardinals with 18. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 1-5 with a game at Shelley coming up on Saturday. Soda Springs improved to 6-0.
