Century downs Pocatello
kang@journalnet.com
POCATELLO -- Facing its largest deficit of the night late in the third quarter of its 44-35 win at Pocatello, the Century girls' basketball team never once panicked. "We all came out and knew what we needed to do and knew that we needed to play calm," senior Brooke Dial said. The Diamondbacks' confidence was well-founded. They racheted up their defensive pressure and finally found a rhythm on offense to outscore the Indians 25-9 over the final 10 minutes of the game and overturn a seven-point deficit.
Kylie Reeder and Tasi Kelemete played key roles in the late surge and each finished in double figures in scoring. That helped neutralize Indians junior Kelsey Parker's 14 points. "It was huge just for the girls to know that they can do it," Century coach Angie Gonzalez said. "We're gaining confidence every single game."
Century (3-2) trailed 26-19 with less than two minutes remaining in the third before launching its comeback. The Diamondbacks scored the final six points of the quarter to trim the deficit to one entering the fourth. Dial, who finished with six of Century's 16 steals, capped that mini-rally by picking off an errant pass and sprinting coast to coast for a layup. "We're so good when we run," Dial said. "In practice, that's all we work on, is fast breaks. We know how to run it, and if we run it, we get points on the board."
That momentum carried over into the fourth quarter. Reeder, who scored seven of her 10 points after halftime, repeatedly drew fouls on drives to the basket, while Kelemete, who finished with 12, chipped in several offensive putbacks. Century, which boasts three starters who stand 5-foot-11, grabbed 23 offensive rebounds to seven for Pocatello (0-6). That explains why the Diamondbacks got to attempt 58 total shots to the Indians' 30.
Pocatello will try to correct some of those deficiencies when it next takes the court against Twin Falls on Saturday at home. Century hosts Blackfoot on the same day. "We're young, and we're trying to figure things out," Pocatello coach Jeff Hough said. "We're in learning mode."
Gonzalez said the same thing about her Diamondbacks. Among the things they learned Thursday? Never to panic in the face of a deficit. "It lets us know that we can come back in any game," Dial said. "It's doable. We can do it whenever we need to, just as long as we play together and we keep composed."
