Cellar blaze cause unknown
RIVERSIDE -- Firefighters have not yet discovered the cause of a fire in a potato cellar that erupted early Wednesday afternoon.
Lt. Bryon Howell, of the Blackfoot Fire Department, said he was not informed about anything regarding the investigation into the blaze. Howell said he was uncertain how long the investigation would take. The fire broke out in a potato cellar on a farm located on State Highway 39 near Riverside.
The farm owner, Winfield Anderson, estimated the damage to the building, tractors, potato pilers, generators and other equipment at between $250,000 and $300,000. Anderson said he discovered the fire at about noon when he went to get a tractor from storage.
Fort Hall, Firth and Blackfoot fire departments worked together to fight the blaze, a job that was hampered by the lack of a hydrant in the area. To fight the fire, the crews had to use water tankers that were filled up at nearby Snake River High School.
