Defining work-study
POCATELLO -- Katie Zigars has just three classes left to complete her master's degree in athletic administration at Idaho State University, but she's in no hurry to leave the university.
Aside from being a student at ISU, she is also works for the university as an assistant media relations director in the Athletic Department's sports information office. In her current role, Zigars keeps statistics for women's soccer, volleyball, basketball and tennis, writes news releases and updates the department's Web site. She also acts as a liaison between athletes and the media and between ISU and the Big Sky Conference. Zigars, 23, grew up in Southern California and moved to Meridian with her family when she was 14 years old. She earned a bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in advertising and public relations from ISU with a minor in marketing. She also played two years for ISU's women's tennis team.
Her graduate work at ISU actually began in a different program. "I started off in the MBA program and switched to athletic administration, she said.
Prior to joining the Athletic Department's sports information office, Zigars has interned there. She joined the staff full-time earlier this year and appears to have found her stride in the sports information office. "I would like to get my degree and continue working right here," Zigars said. "
Aside from that, Zigars hasn't really worked out a long-term plan and doesn't often think about a specific Ph.D. program, unless she's looking to tease her mother. "I joke with my mom that I will get a Ph.D. just so I can one-up her, but I am going to go with this for now," she said.
And now to the questions: ISJ: What's your favorite food?
Zigars: The simpler the better. I enjoy seafood the most. If it comes from the sea I'll eat it. ISJ: If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would it be?
Zigars: I have always wanted to have dinner with Nelson Eddy. He's a late 1930s/early 1940s operetta singer. Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald were a famous duo, the pre-Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of the time. ISJ: Any regrets?
Zigars: Everyone always has regrets, but they shape the person who you are today and I like who I am. ISJ: What's your favorite appliance? Zigars: The word appliance makes me think of food so I would have to say my oven because I like to cook. ISJ: What's the heaviest piece of furniture in your house? Zigars: The heaviest piece of furniture in my house is my nana's dresser. ISJ: Who are your top three dream dinner partners? Zigars: I think it would be fun to sit around a table with Andre Agassi, Marat Safin and Pete Sampras and talk about tennis. ISJ: What was the best day of your life? Zigars: I guess being born. ISJ: The worst day? Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog. All comments are subject to deletion by our Web staff.
