Locals react to Obama win

POCATELLO -- Courtney Johnson repeatedly uttered, "It's unbelievable," and, "Oh my gosh! This is our first black American president!" Johnson, 18, and her two classmates could hardly contain their excitement after CNN announced that Democrat Barack Obama had just clinched the presidency Tuesday night. Johnson had voted earlier in the day and even joked about how some of her friends' parents had voted for Republican John McCain. Johnson and her classmates also cheered for other reasons as they watched the news at the Holiday Inn.
In January, Johnson, a senior at Highland High School, will be taking a trip to Washington, D.C., with her Advanced Placement government class to attend Obama's presidential inauguration. "We're excited for the future of our nation," Johnson said.
And so was Cynthia Hudson, a 69-year-old Pocatello resident who said she had been supporting Obama even before the May primaries. "I'm excited as hell. I've been for Obama since day one. I always enjoyed his demeanor," Hudson said. "As time went on, I fell more in love with him."
Some Republicans at the election center remained optimistic on their post-election reactions. George Hansen, a former Congressman from Pocatello, said the nation will now have to see if Obama will fulfill the promises he made during his campaign, but warned that it has always worried him whenever Democrats dominate both the White House and the Legislature.
"I think it's always a bit dangerous to have one political side in control of both sides of government," Hansen said. "It's always nice when you can have one check on the other." By Yann Ranaivo
