State volleyball roundup
5A
IDAHO FALLS -- Highland did not place at the 5A state tournament after it lost to Coeur d'Alene, 23-25, 25-8, 25-12, 25-17, in the second round of the loser-out bracket Saturday at Hillcrest High. The Rams (31-15) swept Timberline in three sets in the opening round Friday but then dropped a four-set decision against Eagle to slip into the loser-out bracket. Highland took third at last year's tournament.
3A IDAHO FALLS -- Snake River captured its first volleyball trophy since 1976 when it finished in fourth place in the 3A state tournament at Bonneville High.
In their first match Saturday, the Panthers (30-13) beat Fruitland, 13-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-21, to stay alive in the loser-out bracket. Snake River then lost its next match to St. Maries 25-9, 21-25, 25-20, 26-24. St. Maries went on to capture the runner-up trophy. Snake River coach Shelli Van Orden said her team was happy with the trophy, considering the Panthers hadn't made the state playoffs since 2005 and it was her first year at the helm.
"We were not even pegged to be there," Van Orden said. "We were the underdogs from the get-go." Van Orden said with the exception of covering tips, her team performed as well as she could have hoped for against St. Maries.
She said junior setter Shelby Phillips and sophomore hitter Eden Van Orden played especially well. "My girls left everything there," Shelli Van Orden said. "You're always disappointed in that situation when you know you could have won."
2A IDAHO FALLS -- West Side could not continue its success at the 2A state tournament Saturday, dropping both its matches to finish in fourth place at Idaho Falls High.
The Pirates (11-4) had won both their matches Friday to inch to within a win of the championship match. But West Side dropped a tight five-setter to eventual runner-up Melba, losing 15-9 in the final set. West Side then fell 26-24, 27-25, 19-25, 25-22 to eventual champion Parma in the third-place match. West Side hadn't qualified for the state tournament since 2004.
1A North Gem
BURLEY -- North Gem dropped all three sets against Dietrich, 25-13, 25-19, 25-10, ending its season at the 1A-D2 state volleyball tournament on Saturday in Burley. "We never got going today," said North Gem coach Ralph Peterson. "We had a good second half of the season, we're district champs. I'm happy for what we did." Against Dietrich, senior Chynna Holbrook had six kills and three blocks. Aspen Holbrook, a sophomore, added six assists. North Gem went 1-2 at the state tournament and finished the season 13-11 overall. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog.
