Palin's Pocatello roots
csantee@journalnet.com
POCATELLO-- While paging through a family photo album last week, Jim Gower found a Christmas card containing a photo of his cousin Sally's family in Wasilla, Alaska, in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Seated in the lower left corner beside her older brother is a teenage Sarah Heath. Many of her facial features have since changed, but the smile between the freckled cheeks was unmistakable. Jim, 77, said he didn't realize that Sarah Palin was Sarah Heath until she was elected governor of Alaska a couple of years ago and he received an e-mail from Sally's sister announcing the news. Although it is widely known that Palin is from Wasilla and that she was born in Sandpoint and graduated from the University of Idaho, her family tree also has deep roots in the Gate City. Many of her cousins, including Jim, still live here.

Sarah wasn't on McCain's short list until Schmitt and Blakely added her name. Then they sat down with McCain and in less than an hour these two convenced him to select her. What's the reason she was so important to those two guys? She currently is embroiled in legal issues in Alaska, the pipeline bidding was swayed to a company that doesn't have the money or capability to build it, two ethics charges are currently being investigated. there are questions about how their new house was built, and her taking the family on outings where the state was billed the expenses. Also, her husband Todd has issues hanging over his head. What about his membership in a radical organization that wanted Alaska to secede from the United States of America. Wasn't one civil war enough? Three people determined the last Alaska state budget. Sarah, her husband Todd, and the state budget director. I also wonder why Todd was copied on emails dealing with official business, and it has been reported he spends about 50% of his time in the govenor's office. Why? If she wins, will two desks have to be put in the V.P.'s offfice in the White House? Think about it........... " just me wrote on Nov 2, 2008 9:08 PM: " Her experience ? she has more executive experience than obama... " Biter wrote on Nov 3, 2008 12:13 PM: " I didn't think it was possible to find a VP candidate lamer than Dan Quayle but the GOP found her in Sarah Palin. The Grand Old Party is not so grand now. " Farid wrote on Nov 5, 2008 11:18 AM: " I always worry about people who begin with "I don't understand" or "I can't believe" when talking about someone. I don't understand that anyone was willing to vote for Barak Obama but I certainly respect their views and I understand that during this election, I was in the minority. I love Sarah Palin because she is what all these politicans aren't; a real person. I agree she wasn't qualified yet to be president but neither is Obama. Both would be surrounded by a cadre of experienced people helping them get through the transistion process of becoming president. Just because someone hasn't had the experience doesn't mean that they don't have the capacity to make sound decisions. " bengalfan wrote on Nov 6, 2008 1:33 PM: " I assume by saying "real person" you mean someone like yourself. Rest assured, we are all real people living real lives. " Robert wrote on Nov 6, 2008 8:46 PM: " Farid, read the first two sentences of you comment v-e-r-y closely. You complain how I started a sentence, but it's permissable for you to do the same thing. You must be a main stream republican who thinks in terms of "Do as I say, not as I do". Funny, but sad........ Palin dug a large hole for herself and McCain, thank God for this. 1. At the conventions she bragged about Alaska being a socialist state by giving money back to the people. Then turned around and called Obama a socialist for wanting to give a tax cut to the middle class. Which benefits the majority of Idahoans. Hmm. 2. Her shopping spree, on the first one, included a $500 purse for her seven year old daughter. Hmm. 3. Todd, her husband, has belonged to a radical group that wants to secede (separate) from the union. Hmm. 4. Sarah, as mayor of Wasilla started having women who were raped pay for the police kit and hospital medical exams when evidence was gathered. Fact, the paper work was signed by her! 5. Look at what has been in the new today, and in days to come. 6. Reference my first comment for more about this divia. 7. Sarah is a gold digger, both in Alaska as Governor and during the campaign. Look how she has used government and people to enrich herself. The nation got the best and competent leaders on 11/4, not John "The Keating Five" McCain, and Sarah Palin of the "Wasilla Hillbillies" as the campaign people refer to them. God bless America for voting for change, maybe Idaho will do the same next time. " spudgirl23 wrote on Nov 7, 2008 2:01 PM: " Have you looked at Obama's "previous" ties? If anything, Obama & McCain are equally suspicious. If you're going to throw out the "The Keating Five" for McCain, at least throw out the "ACORN/AYERS" realtionship with Obama.... I am amazed how American can vote for a man who voted "present" on almost everything that was presented to congress to vote on. His record is empty and his history is vague. I hope he is everything America has made him out to be! God Bless America! " Robert wrote on Nov 7, 2008 6:23 PM: " Acorn/Ayers, nice hoax by the GOP and Fox noise. A little personal research showed those stories to be false. BUT WAIT, here's a story that has truth to it. The RNC has already sent a team of lawyers "North to Alaska" to inventory and account for everything the Wasilla Hillbillies bought while they were in the lower 48 states. This is an interesting story.......... The McCain-Palin campaign is over, but Wardrobe-gate lives on. More embarrassing details have emerged about Sarah Palin's infamous shopping sprees -- including even more designer duds, plus sprayed-on tans and fancy underwear. On top of the $150,000 first outlined in Federal Election Commission filings, Palin spent "tens of thousands of dollars" on additional clothing, makeup and jewelry for herself and her family, including $40,000 in luxury goods for her husband, Todd, our colleague Michael Shear reports. The campaign was charged for silk boxer shorts, spray tanners and 13 suitcases to carry all the designer clothes, according to two GOP insiders. "The shopping continued after the convention in Minneapolis, it continued all around the country," one source said. "She was still receiving shipments of custom-designed underpinnings up to her 'Saturday Night Live' performance" in October. Sources said expenses were put on the personal credit cards of low-level Palin staffers and discovered when they asked party officials for reimbursement. Newsweek reports that top McCain aides were stunned by the huge tab, especially after adviser Nicolle Wallace had told Palin to buy three outfits for the convention and three for the campaign trail, with a budget of $25,000; instead, the nominee racked up six-figure bills at high-end department stores. "Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast," a McCain aide sniffed to the magazine. Palin has always contended that she didn't ask for the extravagant makeover. The campaign previously said the used clothing would be auctioned off for charity; the L.A. Times reports that a Republican National Committee lawyer is headed to Alaska to inventory and retrieve the items still in her possession. Palin even raised eyebrows for what she didn't wear: In St. Paul during the convention, McCain senior staffers Steve Schmidt and Mark Salter arrived at her hotel room for a briefing and found her wearing nothing but a towel, with a second one wrapped around her wet hair, Newsweek reports. "I'll be just a minute," she said, ordering them to chat with the First Dude while they waited. " Fred McMullen wrote on Nov 7, 2008 8:45 PM: " Who cares about her experience to be president. She's one hot mama. What a tasty dish to set before the king!!! Woowee! Leave those glasses on, baby. I hope they're shock proof! Hoohee ha!! " lox wrote on Nov 8, 2008 9:31 AM: " Robert you talk too much. You have a lot of facts but do you actually know either one? Talk is cheap...
