11 billion pounds of spuds
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- The Idaho Potato Commission expects the state to yield 11 billion pounds of spuds during the harvest season that ends in October.
Potato growers throughout southern Idaho are benefiting from a cool summer and just the right amount of rainfall. Farmer Jim Tiede grows Russet Burbank potatoes on 900 acres in southeastern Idaho and says this is the best crop he's raised in 30 years. More than half of the 300,000 acres of potatoes Idaho will produce this year will be processed into frozen or dehydrated potato products. Nearly 30 percent will be shipped to grocery stores and restaurants nationwide.
Less than 10 percent of this year's harvest will be used to grow more potatoes next year. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog. All comments are subject to deletion by our Web staff.
