Weekend event highlights
This weekend, as always, there is plenty to do in Pocatello and the surrounding areas.

Get out of the house and beef up on some culture tonight at the First Friday Art Walk in Old Town Pocatello. It will begin at 5 p.m. and a variety of vendors will have work by local artists on display in their stores.

Highlights of tonight's walk will be the opening reception of the Idaho Watercolor Society's traveling show, which will be on display at the Pocatello Art Center, located at 444 N. Main St. in Pocatello and an open mic night for the Big Read at the First National Bar on Center St.
If you prefer music to art, or perhaps want to get a healthy dose of both, you may want to think about going to the Idaho State Civic Symphony's opening concert of the 2008 - 2009 season tonight at 7:30 p.m. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Jensen Hall at the Stephens Performing Arts Center.

The performance will feature violinist Corey Cerovsek who will play Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Tickets are $25 and tickets for students through high school are $12. For tickets call 234-1587.
Also on Friday, acoustic guitar player Michael Gulezian will perform at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 309 N. Garfield Ave., as part of the First Friday Coffeehouse. The $8 cost will help fund future First Friday music programs.

As far as local theater goes, the Westside Players will wrap up its 22nd season this weekend with "Cash on Delivery." Doors open at 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, and the buffet service begins at 6:30 p.m. and curtain time is at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $28 for dinner and the show, $15 for show only and $5 for show only for students. For tickets or more information, call the Raven's Nest at 232-2232.
On Saturday, "The Big Read" kickoff will be at the Stephens Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Marilynne Robinson, author of "Housekeeping" will be in attendance and Don Aslett will be the emcee. First Lady Lori Otter will give the introduction and Molly Thomas-Hicks with the National Endowment for the Arts will take part. The event is free but tickets are required. Call the Marshall Public Library at 232-1263, ext. 22 for tickets.

If you would like to get some outdoor exercise this weekend, there are several events for you too. The first annual "Rapid Creek Fun Run" will be held Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Glenn Park Field in Inkom. There will be a 10k and a 5k run/walk and it is open to the public. Registration is $12 for the 5k and $18 for the 10k. Participants are also required to bring at least one canned food item. All proceeds will be donated to the SEICCA food bank and Pocatello Free Clinic. For more information, contact 233-2203.
The 11th annual Run With the Big Dogs event will also be on Saturday. It will begin at 10 a.m. at Centennial Park in Pocatello. Check-in and late registration is from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Late registration is $35 and $2 for each additional dog. Register at the animal shelter or go to www.friendsofthepocatelloanimalshelter.org. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. For more information, call the Pocatello Animal Shelter at 234-6156.

On Sunday, Country Christian music star Charlie Walker will perform at 6 p.m. at Willow Bay Baptist Church, 246 Lee St., in American Falls. Admission is free and the public is welcome. For more information, call 226-2244.
