Buckskin Fire Quickly Snuffed
jbulger@journalnet.com
POCATELLO -- A grass fire that erupted on a hillside and threatened homes on West Buckskin Road was quickly extinguished by numerous firefighters early Friday evening. Capt. Alan Farnsworth of the Pocatello Fire Department said calls came in at 5:45 reporting the blaze, which grew to an estimated five acres before being brought under control. "It was a brush fire in between a couple of structures, but the structures were well protected," Farnsworth said. "It was just a real good combined attack between all the agencies."
Responders from Pocatello Fire Department Stations Three and Five, Chubbuck and Fort Hall fire departments, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service converged on the blaze, creating a logistical headache at the intersection of West Buckskin and North Parks roads, approximately a quarter-mile from the fire. Search and Rescue volunteers turned back vehicles. Several residents of Buckskin Road implored to be allowed to proceed in order to attend to their horses. Law enforcement eventually relented, escorting the residents up the road.
By 6:20, vehicles, led by a pilot car, were allowed to proceed up the road. One car that turned into a driveway near the fire was immediately stopped by a Pocatello Police motorcycle officer. Farnsworth said remaining crews were attending to mop-up operations by 7 p.m.
