Fire forces school evacuation
POCATELLO — Fire department Division Chief Roy Allen believes the person responsible for igniting a fire in a bathroom garbage can at Pocatello High School on Wednesday will eventually be identified.
The fire began a few minutes before 3 p.m., moments before the school was to be let out for the day. It never threatened structural damage to the school or harm to the students, and the fire was quickly extinguished by a school custodial staff member, according to a District 25 news release. Shelley Allen, a spokeswoman for the district, said the school had undergone a lock down and fire drill earlier in the day. When the fire was reported in the afternoon, students, faculty and staff were evacuated to a nearby park. Pocatello High School will resume its normal schedule this morning.
Roy Allen said investigators with the Pocatello Fire Department, along with officials from Pocatello High School, are investigating the fire. “The school will determine who the person was,” he said. “The halls there are monitored with video. Chances are they will make an identification.”
Roy said it’s uncertain whether the fire was set intentionally, but investigators are operating under that assumption. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog. All comments are subject to deletion by our Web staff.
