Sanchez Trial Postponed Again
jbulger@journalnet.com
POCATELLO -- The trial of Jose M. Sanchez, the Chubbuck man accused of 112 counts of felony aggravated battery, was postponed Monday afternoon after a closed hearing, the third time the case has been continued. A court staff member of Sixth District Judge David Nye said a conflict public defender will be appointed for Sanchez. No further information was given as to why the shake-up in Sanchez' counsel occurred so late in the proceedings. Chief Public Defender Randy Schulthies has represented Sanchez from the case's beginning, including a lengthy contested preliminary hearing, multiple motions and other pre-trial proceedings.
No new trial date has been assigned for the case. The appointment of new counsel likely means the trial will not occur for several months, to enable Sanchez' new attorney to become familiar with the case. Sanchez has been in the Bannock County Jail since his Dec. 22 arrest. The 112 counts correspond to the number of days he is alleged to have tortured a woman with an electric wood burning tool, burning her repeatedly on her genital region and buttocks. Police reports indicated that between 10 and 20 percent of the woman's body had suffered burns.
Previous trial dates in June and August were also rescheduled. BY JOHN BULGER
