Lawmakers question gas prices
Local state legislators, Diane Bilyeu and James Ruchti, sent a letter to the Idaho Attorney General’s Office Wednesday asking the state’s top law enforcement officer to look into the reasons that Gate City gasoline is more expensive than in Boise and why Idaho is higher than other states.
In the letter, Bilyeu, D-Pocatello, and Ruchti, D-Pocatello, said a local constituent reached out to them inquiring about the difference in fuel prices between Boise and Pocatello. Prices quoted in the letter were obtained from idahogasprices.com, which said gasoline in the Boise area ranging between $3.96 and $4.15 per gallon for regular unleaded in the 72 hours prior to the letter’s construction. Fuel in Pocatello in the 60 hours prior to the letter’s construction ranged $4.09 to $4.11 per gallon, the letter said. “According to Attorney General Wasden’s report on Idaho motor fuel prices and availability published last month, the geographical differences in the pipeline and storage supply between Pocatello and Boise differ by less than 1 cent. Please follow up with an inquiry as to the wide price differential between gas in Boise and other parts of the state and between Idaho and other states,” the letter states.
Bob Cooper, a spokesman for the Idaho Attorney General’s Office, said the AG’s Office received the letter late Wednesday and was reviewing it. “The Attorney General’s Office monitors gas prices throughout the state,” Cooper said.
The primary purpose for that monitoring, however, is to gauge whether any price fixing, a conspiracy to set fuel prices at any particular amount, is occurring. He said high prices are very rarely the result of illegal activity. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog.
