Skateboarders hone skills
BLACKFOOT — A group of future extreme sportsmen gathered at the skateboard park at Jensen’s Grove in Blackfoot to hone their skills, pick up some new tricks and learn how to stay safe during the opening day of a workshop hosted by 628 Productions of Boise.
Promoter Natalie Beech said the skateboard camp is the sixth held in Southeast Idaho this year. Her husband, Brad Beech and Bryant Chapo, both amateur skateboard competitors instructed the youths in technique and safety. Brad Beech started skateboarding about nine-years ago. He said while the sport is challenging, it allows each sportsman and woman to progress at their own level.
“You can decide for yourself, what you want to do with it,” he said. Brothers, Jason, 7, and Cody, 9, Garriott said they came to the workshop to improve their skills.
Jason started skating about a year ago and said he wanted to learn some cool tricks, Cody said he came to learn how to steer the short board. He tried a technique known as Tic-Tac. “You step on the back of the board and turn,” he said.
Chapo instructed advanced skaters Wednesday and said his students wanted to perfect their Ollies, a method used for jumping. Chapo said students also learned to use safety equipment to minimize injury.
The workshop, which is open to skaters 4 and up, requires students to wear helmets, but Chapo said knee and elbow pads are optional. Shilo Murphy, 12, started skating 4 years ago and said he uses safety equipment only when he’s trying more extreme moves.
The workshop continues Thursday and comes to a close with open competition Friday. Natalie Beech said students can sign up for the skateboard camp Thursday at a reduced admission cost of $50. The fee includes a T-shirt and a chance to compete in Friday’s event.
The competition portion of the camp,, which starts at 5 p.m. is open to everyone and the entry fee is $5. For more information and to sign up for the workshop, call 208-241-9763.
