Inkom police chief wins executive designation
MERIDIAN — Director Jeff Black of the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy presented Chief Cal Edwards, of Inkom, his POST Executive certificate recently.
The award is the highest one given to management-level peace officers in the state. Edwards has an extensive background in law enforcement and emergency medicine. In the early 1980s, he worked as manager over the Magic Valley Ambulance Service for three years, then as a police officer and firefighter for Twin Falls for a decade.
In 1986, he was elected as Twin Falls county coroner, and served in that capacity for seven years. His experience also includes teaching first aid at the College of Southern Idaho and working as a training coordinator at the Police Academy.
During the summer of 1998, he became a police officer for Inkom, and three years later was appointed chief. In addition to his duties as chief, Edwards, who has a master’s in education from the University of Idaho, also coordinates the law enforcement program at Idaho State University, a vocational training program.
He works closely with POST staff to train new peace officers at the university, an alternative to the 10-week patrol academy held in Meridian. Edwards has certificates as a master firearms instructor, emergency vehicles instructor and post-paramedic.
He and his wife, Karla, have four children. He was awarded the certificate July 3 in Inkom.
