POCATELLO - Bryan Wheat, a past ASISU vice president, described himself as a ''middle kid with issues.''
But with three brothers and three sisters to compete with, he said, he's not an overachiever. ''Well not if you look at the rest of my family,'' he said. ''I have one brother in law school and a younger sister who just graduated with two degrees and she's three years younger than me.'' His parents are Dave, a principal at Mountain View Middle School in McCammon, and Pandora Wheat.
Wheat, who plans to graduate in December with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, is also a member of the newly formed Pocatello Running Club. The group, which boasts no regularly scheduled meetings, gets together every Saturday at 5th Street Bagelry and members run at their own pace.
Wheat, originally from Inkom, usually runs 12 miles. He competed in the Pocatello Marathon last year and placed first in his age group and 14th overall.
''It's really relaxing for me,'' Wheat said. ''It's a good way to unwind.'' Saturday, he'll travel to Kentucky to run in his second race, a 26-mile marathon.
''We had some extra flier miles and they had to be used, so I though I'd fly to the coolest marathon I could find,'' he said. Running is only one of Wheat's pastimes, his favorite is riding motorcycles and he's a member of Saturday's Knights, a local riding group. Wheat also enjoys riding horses, hunting and water skiing.
A firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service and part of its heli-attack team, he said he likes to stay in shape. ''I'm pretty outdoorsy,'' Wheat said.
When he graduates from Idaho State University, Wheat plans to take a semester off before shopping for graduate schools. His ultimate goal is to work in college administration. He plans to continue to challenge himself physically as well.
