Winds usher in cold front

POCATELLO — No major damage or power outages were reportedly caused by Tuesday’s high wind, but they did usher in cooler temperatures and rainy weather that is likely to linger through Memorial Day Weekend, said an official with the National Weather Service. “Locally, we had a 57 mph peak wind gust (Tuesday) night when the cold front went through,” said Jeff Hedges, an NWS senior forecaster. “Most areas reported wind gusts from the low 50s to the mid-60s. That stretched across the Snake River Plain from Burley to Idaho Falls in the latter part of the evening.” Hedges said the only report of damage he received was from St. Anthony where a home’s chimney was knocked down by a micro burst of wind.
The winds were part of a cold front passing through Idaho and bringing in cloudy skies and rainy weather. Hedges said that today and Friday have the highest chances for widespread rain showers, followed by sporadic rain Saturday through Monday. He said temperatures will remain in the high 50s to mid-60s through Monday before a slight warming trend takes hold.
“We will start getting closer to 70 degrees by Tuesday,” Hedges said. “But next weekend, there is another system coming in that could bring temperatures back down again. This system won’t be as dramatic, though. Hedges said May 30 could be the best the next 10 days has to offer with temperatures in the mid-70s.
