Bengals out quickly
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Idaho State women couldn't have asked for a much better start to the Big Sky track and field championships at Sacramento State.
After the first day of the heptathlon, the Bengals hold the top three spots. Junior Cassie Merkley sits in first with 3,380 points, followed by sophomore Sydney Wendt with 3,030 and Erin Bell with 3,003. ''To have three girls over 3,000 on the first day is great,'' said coach Dave Nielsen by cell phone. That's a new one for Sydney and Erin. They're on their way to personal bests.''
Senior Amanda Janowitz is also in position to pick up points for Idaho State in the heptathlon, as she's currently in sixth place. A year ago, the Bengals rode a quick start in the heptathlon all the way to their first ever conference championship at Davis Field. Nielsen said another strong performance in the multi-events is key if Idaho State wants any chance of repeating.
''That just sets the tone for the rest of the team and these gals,'' he said. On the men's side, sophomore Brandon Graef faulted out in the shot put, negating a strong start in the decathlon. He currently is in 11th place, one spot behind freshman teammate Brandon McNew.
