MENAN, Idaho (AP) _ An eastern Idaho mayor says he is stepping down over concerns about a city council vote and a city employee's salary.

Menan Mayor Rand Watson governed the town of 700 residents north of Idaho Falls for more than two years.

The mayor resigned Monday after disputing a city council vote on a conditional-use permit he says violated a city ordinance.

Watson says he also quit because the council didn't address his concern about city clerk Stacy Scott's salary. Watson says Scott makes about $30 an hour when surrounding rural towns pay city clerks about $9 an hour.

A city council member will be appointed to serve as mayor until the next city election.
