Working colorful job
POCATELLO - Spring is a time for fresh starts. For Pennie Hugues, the arrival of the season in 2001 afforded the chance to start a career.
She was 36 years old, and it was her first job when she became a delivery driver for Pinehurst Floral & Greenhouse. ''When I went looking for a job at Pinehurst, I was looking to work at the garden center. I applied in the spring. They were also looking for a driver. They hired me as a delivery driver because of my personality,'' she recalled. Also, Hugues was born and raised in Pocatello, which she thinks has helped her in her profession.
''I know a lot of people, and I'm a people person,'' Hugues said. ''I have friends from all over, and I pay attention to different things.'' Hugues was an avid gardener when she was married and the owner of her first home.
''I hadn't worked outside of home, and I wanted something to fill a void in my life,'' Hugues said. ''I didn't need to work, but I had to for my sanity. In my mind, I was an amazing gardener.'' Then her life changed.
She got divorced, and she had three children to take care of. So having a job meant not just fulfilling an emotional need, but also a practical financial one. These days, she enjoys her job at Pinehurst, especially at this time of year when people stop by to look at plants and flowers in bloom, a sign that spring is finally here.
''Some people are ready to buy fertilizer, and others just like to walk through because they like to see what's blooming,'' she said. ''This time of year, people get spring fever. They're tired of winter, so we get about twice as much foot traffic.'' Let the questions begin:

ISJ: If you could have dinner with one famous person, who would it be? Hugues: It would be a toss up between Cher and Bette Midler.

ISJ: When (and if) you arrive at the gates of Heaven, what would you like to hear God say to you? Hugues:There's a lot of people waiting to see you. ISJ: If you could choose a new career, what would it be? Hugues: I would want to work at the greenhouse at Disneyworld. ISJ: If you won the lottery, how would you spend the money?
