Coal plant support pulled
ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - Washington County's top elected leaders have reversed their support for a coal-fired power plant 32 miles across the border in Nevada.
The county commissioners said they originally gave conditional support for a natural gas-powered generator but the plan changed. Sithe Global, a subsidiary of New York private equity giant Blackstone Group, plans to build the 750-megawatt plant near a major natural gas pipeline, but escalating costs for gas convinced it to use coal instead. Washington County leaders withdrew their support Friday, saying the company should abandon the site in Lincoln County, Nev., and find a more remote place for it.
A Toquop spokesman tells The Spectrum of St. George the company never committed to natural gas and chose the site because it was near a major transmission line. The spokesman, Frank Maisano, says intense lobbying swayed Washington county's leaders.
Officials in Springdale, Virgin, Ivins and Mesquite also are on record opposing the coal burning. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog. All comments are subject to deletion by our Web staff.
