Funding crunch for roads?
BOISE, Idaho (AP) _ Idaho is relying more and more on federal funding to keep its roads open and state Transportation Department Director Pam Lowe says that doesn't bode well for the future.

In 1996, Idaho got 45 percent of its funding from the federal government.

By last year, that had risen to 57 percent.
The problem is, Idaho gets more money for roads than its drivers pay in federal fuel taxes.

States that now are subsidizing Idaho aren't happy about that.
Lowe expects the 2010 renewal of the federal transportation funding bill will come with reduced payments to Idaho.

She made the comments Thursday as she introduced her fiscal year 2009 budget request of $682 million.
