Magician moves to Pocatello
POCATELLO - Brandon Munk has escaped from handcuffs on countless occasions. He's freed himself from a giant metal milk can filled with water and sealed at the top with six padlocks.
And if emulating Houdini isn't enough, two years ago the 29-yearold magician predicted newspaper headlines a week in advance in his hometown of Logan, Utah - a feat which still baffles the paper's staff. He also performs illusions, such as making people float and disappear on stage. Munk began his career in magic at the age of 18, after running away with the carnival. Since then, he's perfected his art by performing at venues ranging from children's birthday parties to the college circuit. Last year he performed nearly 200 shows.
''Magic is 75 percent presentation and 25 percent being able to work the trick,'' Munk said. ''It's all about making contact with the audience.'' Munk said his philosophy about magic includes three basic steps, beginning with ''the 30 second rule.'' He said from the time he walks out on stage, he figures that he has about 30 seconds to show the audience that he is a magician who deserves their attention. Next, throughout the show, he has to get the crowd to subconsciously suspend their concept of reality.
The final step is to ''floor them.'' ''Make them leave talking about you and wanting more,'' Munk said.
