Soda High raises gift funds
SODA SPRINGS -The students and teachers at Soda Springs High School raised $1,684 in a penny drive this month to buy gifts for needy local families.
The two-week fundraiser, which concluded last Thursday, was framed as a competition between the four grades at the school. In the end, the junior class won by collecting about $680. For their effort, they were allowed to leave for lunch 15 minutes early Thursday, which was the last school day before Christmas break. ''The way we handled it, we created a penny war between classes to see who could come up with more money,'' Principal Doug Owen said. ''It's amazing what kids will do for 15 minutes.'' The enrollment of Soda Springs High School is 283 students, 70 of whom are juniors. Owen said that on average, each student and teacher pitched in about $5.
The school's staff got their anonymous gift list from tags on an Angel Tree. Each tag on the tree includes a small list of presents which are requested by an economically challenged family. The Angel Tree program in Soda Springs was sponsored by the Main Street Cruisers car club.
Once all the change was collected, the students rolled it and it was taken to a local bank to exchange. ''The bank looked at us kind of cockeyed when (the staff) arrived with all those pennies,'' Owen said.
He said the school has been involved with the Angel Tree program for a few years, but students and teachers have never before raised so much money. ''That's a lot of piggy banks and glove boxes that got cleaned out,'' Owen said.
