Student council honored
Bear Lake Student Council took their yearly trip to the Idaho Association for the Student Councils Conference on November 8-10. While there, students learned many leadership skills by listening to speakers and attending breakout sessions. They also were one of the few schools in Idaho to receive a plaque naming them an Outstanding Student Council for the year.

This was the 10th year in a row that the Bear Lake High School Student Council has earned this award. They also received the new service award for volunteering to work with the Special Olympics Athletes while there and for volunteering to clean up after Friday's dance.

''This is the first time I've gone to Boise,'' said freshman officer Amelia Crane. ''It was really great. In the breakout sessions we got a lot of new ideas to help improve our school and also our lives.''
The main speaker of the conference was Sam Glenn. He was a great motivational speaker, using his humor to keep everyone's attention, but at the same time delivering a great message that made a great impact on the lives of the thousandplus high school students in attendance.

At the beginning of his speech, he created a chalk picture named ''The Path of Life,'' which was the main topic of his speech. In his speeches Thursday night and Friday morning, one of his main points was that by using courage to try new things and going about those things with a good attitude, the students could do anything they dreamed of. This good attitude toward everything would lead them down the right path; the path everyone wants to be on.
''I've never laughed so hard in my life. He was one of the most inspirational speakers I've ever listened to, but very funny at the same time,'' said Junior Jessi Timothy. ''He made me think a lot and I feel he changed the way I think about challenges.''

Friday consisted of first listening to Glenn, and then attending various breakout sessions, where the officers learned how to become better leaders. The Bear Lake High School student body was in charge of a breakout session where they taught students how to get jobs done faster by working as a team, and doing that job with a set plan.
Friday evening, students were able to participate in a dance and also play some games, giving the students an opportunity to just have fun and get to know students from other schools.

The next morning, they had the chance to learn more about the 2009 Special Olympic World Winter Games that will be held in Boise. Those people in charge of the Special Olympics put on a moving, two-hour presentation on what is happening and what people could do to get involved. Some of the students were able to share the weekend with some of the Special Olympians and get to know them.
Erika James, who had this opportunity, says of the experience, ''It was a chance that I will never forget. She (Shayna) taught me to look for the better things in life, and to be proud of yourself, no matter what the circumstance.''

Following this were the closing ceremonies, where the IASC state officers gave their final remarks and then the conference was called to a close. Also at this time they gave out some awards for achievements or service. Bear Lake was awarded the Spirit Award for their service with the Special Olympians and also for helping clean up after the dance.
Tammy Stephens, Bear Lake High School adviser and also the 5th and 6th Region adviser, said of this honor, ''Throughout the entire conference I kept hearing wonderful things about these kids from Bear Lake. We all know they are wonderful, and it's great that others see their service attitude firsthand. It's easy working with a group of hard working young people like ours. I also had fun just watching them all have fun. It was a great experience.''
