Over the top event

Pocatello Ñ The back of Justin LivermoreÕs hand was only inches above the touch pad, when, as if according to a movie script, he changed his grip. In one heroic thrust Ñ like a truck driver whirling a steering wheel Ñ he swung his opponentÕs hand and slammed it into the other pad. The crowd erupted into hoots and cheers.
Enthusiasm was high among participants and spectators for Idaho State UniversityÕs annual Homecoming Arm Wrestling Competition Tuesday. Before the event, hosted on the College of Technology quad under bright sunshine in the cool October air, attendees enjoyed a free buffet of potato salad, fresh rolls, fried chicken and freshly baked cookies, all prepared by students at the college.
This year, more than 100 competitors and onlookers gathered for the contest. Only ISU students, faculty and staff could participate. For an amateur arm-wrestling competition at a midsized state university in the middle of IdahoÕs high desert, the top contenders were exceptionally proficient.
