Killers escape UT jail
MANILA, Utah (AP) - Authorities searched Monday for two convicted killers who climbed a fence and escaped from a county jail near the Utah-Wyoming border.
Danny Martin Gallegos, 49, and Juan Carlos Diaz-Arevelo, 27, escaped Sunday from the Daggett County jail, about 120 miles east of Salt Lake City, said Jack Ford, spokesman for the Utah Department of Corrections. They were discovered missing during an inmate count at 8 p.m. MDT, six hours after they were last seen at the jail wearing gray sweats, he said. SWAT teams and dogs were summoned for the search, said Ford, who had no other details on the manhunt.
''Both men are considered dangerous. Do not approach,'' the county sheriff's office said. Daggett County has a population of less than 1,000. It is home to a portion of Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and Ashley National Forest.
Diaz-Arevelo was convicted of murder and child abuse in 2006. Authorities say Lindsey Fawson, 22, was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun in 2005 in Draper, a Salt Lake City suburb. Gallegos was convicted of aggravated murder in 1991 in Salt Lake County. Details on his case were not immediately available.
Because of overcrowding, the two men had been transferred to the jail from the state prison, Ford said. Article RatingReader CommentsSubmit a CommentCommenting RulesWe encourage your feedback and dialog. All comments are subject to deletion by our Web staff.
