Fire restrictions in effect
IDAHO FALLS - Stage 1 fire restrictions are still in effect and the East Idaho Interagency Fire Center has noted the extreme conditions are the reason for the strict fire regulations.

''Dry conditions and extreme fire behavior were the reasons to put these restrictions into effect. We are seeing fire behavior that is dangerous to the public and to firefighting personnel assigned to battle these fires,'' said Lynn Ballard, fire information officer with the center.

Fire restrictions continue through Labor Day and will beyond, depending on fire conditions, Ballard said.
Stage 1 restrictions require that campfires can be built in developed recreation sites or locations authorized by public land agencies. Also, smoking is allowed only inside a vehicle, building or in a developed recreation site, or in an area that has been cleared of vegetation three feet in diameter. Cook stoves can use liquid petroleum or LPG fuels.

Violation of the acts is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 and/or imprisonment for no more than six months. Those who are determined responsible for starting wildfires also are liable for suppression costs, property damage and face criminal charges.
A complete list of Caribou-Targhee and Idaho Falls Bureau of Land Management authorized sites, information on the fire restrictions, current wildfires in Southeast Idaho or how to report a wildfire can be found at www.idahofireinfo.blm/gov/east/ and click on ''fire restrictions.''

In Pocatello, the state fire marshal and Pocatello Fire Department have imposed a burn ban on all fires within city limits. That includes all agricultural or residential burning of weeds, all backyard recreational or cooking fires, any special-event burning and all pyrotechnic displays. Barbecues and Dutch ovens are not included in the restrictions.
For more information on local fire restrictions, call the Pocatello Fire Department at 234-6201.
