Life as a lifeguard
POCATELLO - This time of year, Highland High School senior Jake Stalnaker spends his days in the sun with a whistle around his neck keeping swimmers safe at the Ross Park Aquatic Center.
Stalnaker, 17, started the job last year after seeing an opening posted at school. He returned this summer because he enjoys the work environment, and it beats the alternative. ''You get an excellent tan, and it's nice being outside on nice days instead of being in the back of a fast food restaurant,'' Stalnaker said. In the long off season, Stalnaker runs Natural World Aquatics, a salt water fish tank cleaning business. He got the idea from taking care of his own 75-gallon tank, which among other things, contains a small coral reef.
His work includes cleaning the glass and accessories, such as pumps, as well as changing the water. He also adds the needed chemicals and supplements. ''It's something I make money at but enjoy doing anyway,'' Stalnaker said.
Stalnaker also works at Deleta Skating Rink on Yellowstone Avenue. At school, Stalnaker is the vice president of the student body and enjoys taking business classes and lifting weights. He is also a member of the Business Professionals of America club at Highland.
After his lifeguard shifts, Stalnaker hangs out with his coworkers. They often grab a bite to eat at Arctic Circle and go to the drive in theater to catch a movie afterward.
