Sides picking Adamcik jury
jhancock@journalnet.com
TWIN FALLS - Before attorneys from either side of the Torey Adamcik murder trial had even spoken with prospective jurors Wednesday, a judge had already excused a dozen of them. Sixth District Judge Peter D., McDermott began the jury selection process in Twin Falls Wednesday morning by telling the roughly 120 prospective jurors what the charges were against Adamcik - first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He continued by asking the candidates three qualifying questions before letting prosecuting and defense attorneys begin their questioning.
McDermott wanted jurors to discuss whether they were able to presume Adamcik innocent, if they were able to be fair and impartial and if being sequestered in Pocatello for potentially two weeks would be difficult. A total of 12 prospective jurors were excused after giving their answers to McDermott. Two of the candidates said they had children graduating high school this week, one is getting married Saturday and one would-be juror said she is the sole source of nourishment for her infant child.
When a juror is excused, another one is randomly selected from the pool of people waiting. Once 38 prospective jurors are found who cannot be excused for cause, both prosecuting and defense attorneys will take turns excusing 12 jurors each with
cause until the pool is reduced to just 14 - the 12 who will serve as jurors and two alternates. By Jimmy Hancock
