Letter from ISU faculty
The following is the text of a letter written by Idaho State University faculty regarding the resignation of Dean John Kijinski.
Thursday January 18, 2007 To: Robert A. Wharton
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs From: Chairs of the College of Arts and Sciences
Re: Dean John Kijinski’s Resignation We, the Department Chairs of the College of Arts and Sciences, are writing this letter to register our disappointment with the announcement by John Kijinski that he has resigned his position as our Dean.
First and foremost, Dean Kijinski is the leader of our College and has strong support from the College of Arts and Sciences chairs, faculty, and staff. He is an even handed administrator and regarded as a man of honesty and integrity. Furthermore, he has implemented an effective, genuinely transparent, collegial, cost efficient model of leadership and governance, has made tough decisions and fought difficult battles on behalf of his faculty and departments, and has moved our College forward in numerous ways. Equally important is that he has academic experience and knows exactly the responsibilities and challenges faculty and chairs have to deal with on a day to day basis. In our meeting today we asked John why he decided to resign. He simply and respectfully indicated that his vision of our College and its future is not shared by the higher administration and thus it is in everyone’s best interest that he step down. While we want him as our Dean, we respect his decision. At the same time, we believe that John’s resignation is cause for concern. For many of us a rejection of our Dean’s leadership translates as a vote of no confidence in our (chairs, faculty, and staff) vision of our College and the direction we want it to move in. Just a few months ago we met with President Vailas and he assured us in response to several specific questions that the future of our College was in our hands. We question whether this is the case.
We respectfully request a meeting with you as soon as possible to discuss several issues pertaining to the future of our College. They include where the College of Arts and Sciences and its Departments fit into the new administration’s strategic plan, what input we will have in choosing the next Dean of our College, and what decision-making styles and directives we can expect in the future. If we are to responsibly represent our faculty and effectively do our job, then we need a serious, open discussion on a number of issues. In conclusion, we affirm our strong support for Dean Kijinski and look forward to meeting with you to discuss this and other matters that directly relate to the future of our College and Idaho State University. We thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
Sincerely, Chairs of the College of Arts and Sciences
