Quilters contribute to annual blanket drive
POCATELLO — Community Quilting Day recruited more than 30 volunteers who cut, stitched and tied handmade quilts and blankets to be donated to local community groups.
Organizer Jerri Johnson said the event, now in its second year, contributed to the annual blanket drive conducted by the Central Christian Church. Community Quilting Day was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Seventh Avenue. “We wanted to host it because we have a good central location,” said Johnson, who described herself as a tier — not a quilter.
Her niece Charlotte Widdison, 13, said it was her first try at the traditional art and she said she really enjoyed helping out. “I like to do community service,” she said.
Widdison expected volunteers to turn out about 20 quilts Saturday. Johnson also recruited freind Janet Tripple to help out at the super-sized quilting bee.
Tripple said all material for the quilts was donated. She stayed busy sewing infant receiving blankets and producing an array of colorful fleece comforters.
The Central Christian Church, founded in 1915 and located on East Center Street, donates the blankets to local service organizations such as the Salvation Army, S.E.I.C.A.A. and Aid for Friends. By Debbie Bryce - Journal Writer
